The Three Humors: Mukkutram

Each humor has its own seat in the body, its own regulating functions, and its own characteristic pathological manifestations.
Vatham is composed of the elements air and ether. Its qualities are dryness, lightness, coldness, roughness, subtlety, and mobility. Its primary function is movement — nerve impulses, muscle contraction, respiration, circulation, peristalsis, and elimination. The seat of Vatham in the body is the colon, though it governs the entire nervous system. When balanced, Vatham promotes creativity, flexibility, and vitality. When imbalanced, it causes anxiety, tremors, bloating, constipation, insomnia, and neurological disorders. Vatham is the most important humor because it governs the other two — without movement, neither transformation (Pittham) nor structure (Kapam) can function.
Pittham is composed of the elements fire and water. Its qualities are heat, sharpness, slight oiliness, lightness, and spreading nature. Its primary function is transformation — digestion, metabolism, temperature regulation, vision, skin health, and intellectual comprehension. The seat of Pittham is the stomach and small intestine, with secondary seats in the eyes, skin, and liver. When balanced, Pittham produces intelligence, courage, and warm complexion. When imbalanced, it causes fever, inflammation, hyperacidity, skin rashes, jaundice, and irritability.
Kapam is composed of the elements water and earth. Its qualities are heaviness, coldness, oiliness, slowness, smoothness, stability, and density. Its primary function is structure and lubrication — building tissues, joint lubrication, immune strength, memory retention, and moisture balance. The seat of Kapam is the chest. When balanced, Kapam provides strength, stability, endurance, and compassion. When imbalanced, it causes obesity, congestion, edema, diabetes, lethargy, and mucus-related disorders.
The Five Subtypes of Each Humor
Each humor has five subtypes that govern specific physiological functions. Vatham subtypes are: Piranan (governs respiration and swallowing, located in the head and chest), Abanan (governs elimination downward — feces, urine, menses, semen), Vyanan (governs circulation and distribution throughout the body), Uthanan (governs eructation, sneezing, and upward movement), and Samanan (governs digestion and nutrient absorption in the stomach). Pittham subtypes are: Pachagam (digestive fire in the stomach), Ranjagam (blood formation and coloration, located in the liver and spleen), Prasagam (vision and complexion, located in the eyes), Alosagam (temperature regulation, located in the skin), and Sadagam (consciousness and mental clarity, located in the brain). Kapam subtypes are: Avalambagam (structural support of the chest and heart), Kiledagam (digestive moisture in the stomach, also responsible for taste perception), Pothagam (taste perception on the tongue), Tharpagam (lubrication of the head, eyes, and nasal passages), and Santhigam (joint lubrication). Understanding these subtypes allows the Siddha clinician to localize the exact site of imbalance and select treatments that target the specific subtype involved.
The Seven Body Constituents: Udal Thathukkal
The body is built from seven sequential tissues (Udal Thathukkal), each nourished by the previous one through metabolic transformation. Saram (plasma/chyle) is the first tissue formed from digested food — it provides nutrition to all other tissues and carries nutrients through the circulation. Senneer (blood) is formed from refined plasma — it carries oxygen, nutrients, and immune factors throughout the body. The Three Malas
The malas are the three waste products of the body.
