Botanical Overview

Commonly known as American Hellebore, this species belongs to the Liliaceae family. This species holds a prominent place in the global materia medica, with an extensive record of traditional use spanning diverse cultures and medical systems. The lily family (Liliaceae) includes bulbous herbs with erect stems, alternate leaves, and showy six-parted flowers with prominent stamens. The underground bulbs serve as storage organs rich in carbohydrates. Many species contain steroidal saponins and alkaloids with medicinal properties.

General Description

It is extremely toxic, and is considered a pest plant by farmers with livestock. The species has acquired a large number of other common names within its native range, including American false hellebore, American white hellebore, bear corn, big hellebore, corn lily, devil’s bite, duck retten, itchweed, poor Annie, blue hellebore and tickleweed.

Traditional Uses

American Hellebore has been traditionally used for digestive health, respiratory conditions, and pain and inflammation, among other applications.

Digestive health.

  • Dyspepsia

For digestive complaints, the herb is typically prepared as a tea or decoction taken before meals. The bitter compounds stimulate digestive secretions and improve nutrient absorption. Some traditions use the powdered root or leaves in small doses as a stomachic tonic.

Respiratory conditions.

Respiratory conditions are addressed through steam inhalation of the herb’s vapors or internal use as a warm tea. The hot infusion acts as an expectorant, helping to loosen phlegm and clear congestion. Some traditions combine it with honey for coughs.
