Botanical Overview

Cacao (Theobroma cacao) is a flowering plant in the Sterculiaceae family. The traditional uses of this species reflect its genuine medicinal value, validated by generations of practical experience. The sterculia family (Sterculiaceae) includes trees and shrubs with alternate leaves, often with stellate hairs. The flowers have five sepals and petals, and the fruits are typically capsules or follicles. Many species produce mucilaginous substances and have traditional uses as demulcents.

General Description

Its seeds—cocoa beans when dried and fermented—are used to make chocolate liquor, cocoa powder, cocoa butter and chocolate. Although the tree is native to the tropics of the Americas, the largest producer of cocoa beans in 2022 was Côte d’Ivoire.

Respiratory conditions.

Respiratory conditions are addressed through steam inhalation of the herb’s vapors or internal use as a warm tea. The hot infusion acts as an expectorant, helping to loosen phlegm and clear congestion. Some traditions combine it with honey for coughs.
