Botanical Overview

California Peppertree (Schinus molle) is a flowering plant in the Anacardiaceae family. This plant has earned a place in traditional medicine through its consistent therapeutic benefits, recorded across multiple cultures. The cashew family (Anacardiaceae) includes trees and shrubs with resinous bark and leaves containing phenolic compounds such as urushiol, which can cause contact dermatitis. The flowers are small and clustered, and the fruits are often drupes with a resinous or oily seed. Many species have traditional uses for their oils and resins.

General Description

It is native to an area from the Peruvian Andes to southern Brazil. The bright pink fruits of S. molle are often sold as “pink peppercorns”, although it is unrelated to black pepper (Piper nigrum). The word molle in Schinus molle comes from mulli, the Quechua word for the tree. The tree is host to the pepper-tree moth, Bombycomorpha bifascia.
