Red Saunders

Botanical Overview

Red Saunders (Pterocarpus santalinus) is a flowering plant in the Fabaceae family. Traditional medicine systems have documented several valuable applications for this species, supported by its observed therapeutic effects. The legume family (Fabaceae) includes trees, shrubs, and herbs that produce pods (legumes) and form nitrogen-fixing root nodules through symbiosis with bacteria. It should not be confused with the aromatic Santalum sandalwood trees native to southern India.
