Botanical Overview

Common Smartweed (Polygonum hydropiper) is a flowering plant in the Polygonaceae family. Traditional medicine systems have documented several valuable applications for this species, supported by its observed therapeutic effects. The buckwheat family (Polygonaceae) includes herbs, shrubs, and vines with swollen stem nodes (joints) and simple, alternate leaves with sheathing stipules called ochreae. The flowers are small and clustered. Many species contain anthraquinone glycosides and tannins.

General Description

A widespread species, Persicaria hydropiper is found in Australia, New Zealand, temperate Asia, Europe and North America. The plant grows in damp places and shallow water. Cultivated varieties are eaten in East Asia for their pungent flavor.

Traditional Uses

Common Smartweed has been traditionally used for digestive health, skin and wound care, and urinary tract health, among other applications.
