Botanical Overview

Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus) is a flowering plant in the Anacardiaceae family. The traditional uses of this species reflect its genuine medicinal value, validated by generations of practical experience. The cashew family (Anacardiaceae) includes trees and shrubs with resinous bark and leaves containing phenolic compounds such as urushiol, which can cause contact dermatitis. The flowers are small and clustered, and the fruits are often drupes with a resinous or oily seed. Many species have traditional uses for their oils and resins.

General Description

It grows up to 4 m (13 ft) tall and is cultivated for its aromatic resin, mainly on the Greek island of Chios, around the Turkish town of Çeşme and northern parts of Iraq.
