Botanical Overview

Picrorhiza (Picrorhiza kurrooa) belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family. Limited but reliable traditional records indicate this plant has recognized medicinal applications in one or more healing traditions. The figwort family (Scrophulariaceae) includes herbs and shrubs with alternate or opposite leaves and two-lipped, often showy flowers. The fruits are typically capsules with many small seeds. Many species contain iridoid glycosides and cardiac glycosides with medicinal properties.

It is one of the oldest medicinal plants traded from the Karnali zone. Known as kutki or कुटकी in Nepali, it is a perennial herb and is used as a substitute for Indian gentian.
