Botanical Overview

Commonly known as Chinese Ginseng, this species belongs to the Araliaceae family. Across multiple healing traditions, this plant has earned recognition as a versatile medicinal species with applications ranging from first-aid to chronic disease management. The ivy family (Araliaceae) includes trees, shrubs, and climbers with alternate, often compound leaves and small flowers arranged in umbels. The fruits are typically fleshy berries. Many species produce triterpenoid saponins with adaptogenic and anti-inflammatory properties.

General Description

It is a perennial plant that grows in the mountains of East Asia. It is mainly cultivated in China, Korea, Russia, and Japan. P. ginseng is an herbaceous perennial plant, 30–60 cm tall, with palmately compound leaves, serrated leaflets, a terminal umbel of 30–50 flowers, red round fruits, and kidney-shaped seeds. P. ginseng is primarily cultivated in Korea. While all South Korean ginseng is P. ginseng, ginseng production in China encompasses both P. ginseng and South China ginseng (Panax notoginseng). There is little evidence that using P. ginseng provides any health effect. It may cause side effects or interact with various medications and conditions.

Digestive health.

For digestive complaints, the herb is typically prepared as a tea or decoction taken before meals. The bitter compounds stimulate digestive secretions and improve nutrient absorption. Some traditions use the powdered root or leaves in small doses as a stomachic tonic.

Respiratory conditions.

Respiratory conditions are addressed through steam inhalation of the herb’s vapors or internal use as a warm tea. The hot infusion acts as an expectorant, helping to loosen phlegm and clear congestion. Some traditions combine it with honey for coughs.

For pain and inflammation, preparations are applied both topically as compresses and taken internally. A warm poultice draws blood to the area and promotes healing, while internal preparations address systemic inflammation.
