Botanical Overview

Indian Fig (Opuntia ficus-indica) is a flowering plant in the Cactaceae family. This plant has earned a place in traditional medicine through its consistent therapeutic benefits, recorded across multiple cultures. The cactus family (Cactaceae) includes succulent plants with thick, fleshy stems modified for water storage and spines instead of leaves. The flowers are typically large, showy, and short-lived with numerous petals and stamens. Many species produce alkaloids and have traditional medicinal uses.

General Description

O. ficus-indica is the most widespread and most commercially important cactus. It is grown primarily as a fruit crop, and also for the vegetable nopales and other uses. Cacti are good crops for dry areas because they efficiently convert water into biomass. O. ficus-indica is the most widespread of the long-domesticated cactuses. Opuntia species hybridize easily, but the wild origin of O. ficus-indica is likely to have been in central Mexico, where its closest genetic relatives are found.
