Botanical Overview

Commonly known as Tobacco, this species belongs to the Solanaceae family. Traditional healers across continents have independently recognized the medicinal value of this species, leading to one of the most extensive ethnobotanical records available. The nightshade family (Solanaceae) includes herbs, shrubs, and small trees with alternate leaves and star-shaped or trumpet-shaped flowers. The fruits are typically berries or capsules. Many species produce potent alkaloids including tropanes, solanines, and nicotine, making this family both medicinally valuable and potentially toxic.

General Description

N. tabacum is the most commonly grown species in the genus Nicotiana, as the plant’s leaves are commercially harvested to be processed into tobacco for human use. The plant is native to Bolivia, commonly grown throughout the world and often found in cultivation. It grows to heights between 1 and 2 metres (3. 3 and 6. 6 ft). Research is ongoing into its ancestry among wild Nicotiana species, but it is believed to be a hybrid of Nicotiana sylvestris, N. tomentosiformis, and possibly N. otophora.
