Commonly known as Bitter Melon, this species belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. Across multiple healing traditions, this plant has earned recognition as a versatile medicinal species with applications ranging from first-aid to chronic disease management. The gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) includes climbing or trailing vines with tendrils, large alternate leaves, and showy yellow or white flowers that are typically unisexual. The fruits are fleshy gourds, melons, or squashes with many seeds. Many species produce cucurbitacins, bitter compounds with purgative and anti-inflammatory activity.

General Description

Its many varieties differ substantially in the shape and bitterness of the fruit. It’s native range is distributed from Tropical and Subtropical Old World to South Pacific. Bitter melon originated in Africa and Asia, where it was a dry-season staple food of ǃKung hunter-gatherers. Wild or semi-domesticated variants spread across Asia in prehistory, and it was likely fully domesticated in Southeast Asia. It is widely used in the cuisines of East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
