Botanical Overview

Cajeput (Melaleuca leucadendra) is a species in the Myrtaceae family. The myrtle family (Myrtaceae) includes trees and shrubs with opposite leaves that contain aromatic oil glands. The flowers are showy with numerous stamens, and the fruits are often fleshy berries or capsules. Many species produce essential oils with antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Although comprehensive ethnobotanical records are limited, phytochemical studies have identified 29 compounds in this species, suggesting potential medicinal value.

General Description

It grows as a tree to more than 20 m (70 ft) with a trunk covered with thick, white, papery bark and weeping thinner branches. It has a long flowering season, can flower at almost any time of the year and is often grown as a tree in parks and on roadsides. It was the first melaleuca to be described and was described from a specimen growing in Indonesia.
