Mamey

Botanical Overview

Mamey (Mammea americana) is a flowering plant in the Clusiaceae family. Traditional medicine systems have documented several valuable applications for this species, supported by its observed therapeutic effects. The garcinia family (Clusiaceae) includes trees and shrubs with opposite, leathery leaves and resinous sap that is often yellow. The flowers are typically showy with numerous stamens, and the fruits are often fleshy capsules. Many species produce xanthones and polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs) with significant biological activity.

General Description

It has also been classified as belonging to the family Guttiferae Juss. (1789), which would make it a relative of the mangosteen. In certain Latin American countries, Mammea americana is referred to as “yellow mamey” (Spanish: mamey amarillo) to distinguish it from the unrelated but similar-looking Pouteria sapota, whose fruit is usually called “red mamey” (mamey colorado or mamey rojo).
