Botanical Overview
Commonly known as Lantana, this species belongs to the Verbenaceae family. Across multiple healing traditions, this plant has earned recognition as a versatile medicinal species with applications ranging from first-aid to chronic disease management. The verbena family (Verbenaceae) includes herbs, shrubs, and trees with opposite leaves and spikes or clusters of small, tubular flowers with four or five petals. Many species produce aromatic oils in glandular hairs on their leaves and stems.

It is a very adaptable species, which can inhabit a wide variety of ecosystems; once it has been introduced into a habitat it spreads rapidly; between 45ºN and 45ºS and less than 1,400 metres in altitude.

Lantana has been traditionally used for respiratory conditions, skin and wound care, and pain and inflammation, among other applications.

Respiratory conditions are addressed through steam inhalation of the herb’s vapors or internal use as a warm tea. The hot infusion acts as an expectorant, helping to loosen phlegm and clear congestion. Some traditions combine it with honey for coughs.
