Botanical Overview

Commonly known as Physic Nut, this species belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. This species holds a prominent place in the global materia medica, with an extensive record of traditional use spanning diverse cultures and medical systems. The spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) includes an extremely diverse group of plants ranging from small herbs to large trees, many with milky sap that can be irritating or toxic. The flowers are typically small and unisexual, often arranged in distinctive inflorescences. Many species contain diterpene esters and other bioactive compounds.

General Description

It has been spread to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, becoming naturalized or invasive in many areas. The specific epithet, “curcas”, was first used by Portuguese physician and naturalist Garcia de Orta more than 400 years ago. Common names in English include physic nut, Barbados nut, poison nut, bubble bush or purging nut. In parts of Africa and areas in Asia such as India it is often known as “castor oil plant” or “hedge castor oil plant”, but it is not the same as the castor oil plant, Ricinus communis.

Physic Nut has been traditionally used for digestive health, skin and wound care, and pain and inflammation, among other applications.
