Botanical Overview

Star Anise (Illicium verum) is a flowering plant in the Illiciaceae family. The traditional uses of this species reflect its genuine medicinal value, validated by generations of practical experience. This species belongs to the Illiciaceae family, a group of flowering plants.

General Description

Its star-shaped pericarp fruits harvested just before ripening are a spice that closely resembles anise in flavor. Its primary production country is China, followed by Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. Star anise oil is highly fragrant, used in cooking, perfumery, soaps, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and skin creams. Until 2012, when they switched to using genetically modified E. coli, Roche Pharmaceuticals used up to 90% of the world’s annual star anise crop to produce oseltamivir (Tamiflu) via shikimic acid.

Traditional Uses

Star Anise has been traditionally used for digestive health, respiratory conditions, and skin and wound care, among other applications.

Skin and wound care.

  • Scabies

For skin conditions, the fresh or dried plant is applied topically as a poultice, wash, or compress. A strong decoction can be used to clean wounds and sores. The antimicrobial properties help prevent infection while promoting tissue repair.
