Botanical Overview

Black Hellebore (Helleborus niger) belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. Limited but reliable traditional records indicate this plant has recognized medicinal applications in one or more healing traditions. The buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) includes herbs with alternate or basal leaves and showy flowers with numerous stamens and pistils. Many species contain protoanemonin and other acrid compounds that cause skin irritation. Despite their toxicity, several species have been used in traditional medicine for pain and inflammation.

General Description

It is one of about 20 species from the genus Helleborus. It is a poisonous cottage garden favourite because it flowers in the depths of winter. Although the flowers resemble wild roses (and despite its common name), Christmas rose does not belong to the rose family (Rosaceae).
