Botanical Overview

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) belongs to the Rosaceae family. Limited but reliable traditional records indicate this plant has recognized medicinal applications in one or more healing traditions. The rose family (Rosaceae) includes trees, shrubs, and herbs with five-petaled flowers and numerous stamens. Many species produce edible fruits such as apples, pears, cherries, and berries. The family includes both ornamental roses and many species with astringent and medicinal properties.

General Description

It is native throughout most of Europe and Western Asia (Near East and Middle East). It has been introduced and naturalised in North America. Meadowsweet has also been referred to as queen of the meadow, pride of the meadow, meadow-wort, meadow queen, lady of the meadow, dollof, meadsweet, and bridewort.

Traditional Uses

Meadowsweet has been traditionally used for digestive health, urinary tract health, and pain and inflammation, among other applications.

Digestive health.

  • Laxative

For digestive complaints, the herb is typically prepared as a tea or decoction taken before meals. The bitter compounds stimulate digestive secretions and improve nutrient absorption. Some traditions use the powdered root or leaves in small doses as a stomachic tonic.

Urinary tract health.

  • Diuretic

Urinary tract applications typically involve drinking the herb as a mild tea, which increases urine production and helps flush the urinary system. It may be combined with other demulcent herbs to soothe irritated tissues.

Pain and inflammation.

  • Rheumatism

For pain and inflammation, preparations are applied both topically as compresses and taken internally. A warm poultice draws blood to the area and promotes healing, while internal preparations address systemic inflammation.
