Botanical Overview

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a flowering plant in the Polygonaceae family. This plant has earned a place in traditional medicine through its consistent therapeutic benefits, recorded across multiple cultures. The buckwheat family (Polygonaceae) includes herbs, shrubs, and vines with swollen stem nodes (joints) and simple, alternate leaves with sheathing stipules called ochreae. General Description

Buckwheat cultivation originated around the 6th millennium BC in the region of what is now Yunnan Province in southwestern China. The name “buckwheat” is used for several other species, such as Fagopyrum tataricum, a domesticated food plant raised in Asia.
