Botanical Overview

Commonly known as Queensland Asthma Herb, this species belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. Traditional healers across continents have independently recognized the medicinal value of this species, leading to one of the most extensive ethnobotanical records available. The spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) includes an extremely diverse group of plants ranging from small herbs to large trees, many with milky sap that can be irritating or toxic. The flowers are typically small and unisexual, often arranged in distinctive inflorescences. Many species contain diterpene esters and other bioactive compounds.

General Description

It is a hairy herb that grows in open grasslands, roadsides and pathways. It is widely used in traditional herbal medicine across many cultures, particularly for asthma, skin ailments, and hypertension. It is also consumed in herbal tea form as folk medicine for fevers in the Philippines (where it is known as tawa-tawa), particularly for dengue fever and malaria.
