Botanical Overview

Wou Chou Yu (Euodia rutaecarpa) is a species in the Rutaceae family. The citrus family (Rutaceae) includes trees and shrubs with gland-dotted leaves that release aromatic oils when crushed. The flowers are typically white with four or five petals, and the fruits are often modified berries with a leathery rind. Most species produce alkaloids and limonoids with medicinal activity. Although comprehensive ethnobotanical records are limited, phytochemical studies have identified 29 compounds in this species, suggesting potential medicinal value.

General Description

It was previously classified in the genus Euodia as Euodia ruticarpa. The fruit is usually used, denoted sometimes as fructus. It has a strong bitter taste, and is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is a recognized herb in Kampo. Both the former genus name and the species name are often misspelled, and the plant usually appears in sources dealing with traditional Chinese medicine as “Evodia(e) rutaecarpa”.
