Botanical Overview

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a flowering plant in the Zingiberaceae family. Traditional medicine systems have documented several valuable applications for this species, supported by its observed therapeutic effects. The ginger family (Zingiberaceae) includes tropical aromatic herbs with rhizomatous root systems, spiral leaves, and showy flowers with petal-like staminodes. Many species produce essential oils in specialized oil cells throughout their tissues. This family is renowned for culinary spices and digestive medicines.

General Description

It is a perennial, rhizomatous, herbaceous plant native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia that requires temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and high annual rainfall to thrive. Plants are gathered each year for their rhizomes, some for propagation in the following season and some for consumption or dyeing.

Traditional Uses

Turmeric has been traditionally used for digestive health, respiratory conditions, and skin and wound care, among other applications.
