Botanical Overview

Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) is a flowering plant in the Cucurbitaceae family. Traditional medicine systems have documented several valuable applications for this species, supported by its observed therapeutic effects. The gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) includes climbing or trailing vines with tendrils, large alternate leaves, and showy yellow or white flowers that are typically unisexual. It yields varieties of winter squash and pumpkin, but the most widespread varieties belong to the subspecies Cucurbita pepo subsp. pepo, called summer squash.
