Botanical Overview

Commonly known as Petitgrain, this species belongs to the Rutaceae family. Traditional healers across continents have independently recognized the medicinal value of this species, leading to one of the most extensive ethnobotanical records available. The citrus family (Rutaceae) includes trees and shrubs with gland-dotted leaves that release aromatic oils when crushed. The flowers are typically white with four or five petals, and the fruits are often modified berries with a leathery rind. Most species produce alkaloids and limonoids with medicinal activity.

General Description

It is native to Southeast Asia and has been spread by humans to many parts of the world. It is a cross between the pomelo, Citrus maxima, and the wild type mandarin orange, Citrus reticulata. The bitter orange is used to make essential oil, used in foods, drinks, and pharmaceuticals. The Seville orange is prized for making British orange marmalade.
