Botanical Overview

Colocynth (Citrullus colocynthis) is a flowering plant in the Cucurbitaceae family. The traditional uses of this species reflect its genuine medicinal value, validated by generations of practical experience. The gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) includes climbing or trailing vines with tendrils, large alternate leaves, and showy yellow or white flowers that are typically unisexual. The fruits are fleshy gourds, melons, or squashes with many seeds. Many species produce cucurbitacins, bitter compounds with purgative and anti-inflammatory activity.

General Description

It resembles a common watermelon vine but bears small, hard fruits with a bitter pulp. The plant contains cytotoxic cucurbitacins and is thus unsafe to use as an herbal medicine. It originally bore the scientific name Colocynthis citrullus.
