Botanical Overview

Cananga (Cananga odorata) belongs to the Annonaceae family. Limited but reliable traditional records indicate this plant has recognized medicinal applications in one or more healing traditions. The custard-apple family (Annonaceae) includes trees and shrubs with simple, alternate leaves and distinctive three-petaled flowers. The fruits are typically fleshy aggregates of berries. Many species produce acetogenins and isoquinoline alkaloids with potent biological activity.

General Description

It is native to areas from Indochina to northeastern Australia, and has been introduced to many other regions. It is valued for the essential oil, also called ylang-ylang, which is extracted from the flowers. Ylang-ylang is one of the most extensively used natural fragrances in the perfume industry.
