Heart Of Jesus (Caladium bicolor) belongs to the Araceae family. Limited but reliable traditional records indicate this plant has recognized medicinal applications in one or more healing traditions. The arum family (Araceae) includes herbs, climbers, and aquatics with a distinctive inflorescence consisting of a fleshy spike (spadix) surrounded by a modified leaf (spathe). Many species produce calcium oxalate crystals and acrid compounds that cause intense irritation. Despite this, several are used medicinally after proper preparation.

General Description

It is grown as a houseplant for its large, heart or lance-shaped leaves with striking green, white, pink, and red blotching. Hundreds of cultivars are available. It is a problematic invasive species in Trinidad and Tobago, Guam, Micronesia, Palau, Hawaii and the Philippines, and naturalized populations can be found in most of the rest of the world’s tropics, including Africa, the Indian subcontinent, southeast Asia and Malesia.
