Botanical Overview

Tree Poppy (Bocconia frutescens) is a flowering plant in the Papaveraceae family. Traditional medicine systems have documented several valuable applications for this species, supported by its observed therapeutic effects. The poppy family (Papaveraceae) includes herbs with milky or colored sap and showy flowers with two or three sepals that fall off as the flower opens. The fruits are capsules with many small seeds. This family produces benzylisoquinoline alkaloids including morphine, codeine, and sanguinarine.

General Description

It is native to the Americas, including Mexico, parts of Central and South America, and the West Indies. It is perhaps better known in Hawaii, where it is an introduced species and an aggressive invasive weed with rapid negative effects on local ecosystems. In other parts of the United States it is used as an ornamental plant for its “tropical”-looking foliage.
