Botanical Overview

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) is a flowering plant in the Fabaceae family. This plant has earned a place in traditional medicine through its consistent therapeutic benefits, recorded across multiple cultures. General Description

It is widely grown in the tropics and subtropics by small and large commercial producers, both as a grain legume and as an oil crop. Underground fruiting (geocarpy) is atypical among legumes, which led botanist Carl Linnaeus to name the species hypogaea, from Greek ‘under the earth’.

Traditional Uses

Groundnut has been traditionally used for urinary tract health, pain and inflammation, and reproductive health.
