Bai Zhi

Botanical Overview

Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica) belongs to the Apiaceae family. Limited but reliable traditional records indicate this plant has recognized medicinal applications in one or more healing traditions. The carrot family (Apiaceae) includes herbs with hollow stems, alternate leaves, and distinctive umbrella-shaped flower clusters called umbels. Many species have aromatic roots and seeds used as culinary spices and medicines. The family includes both nutritious vegetables and highly toxic species.

General Description

This species tend to grow near river banks, along streams and among rocky shrubs. The root of the plant is widely used for its medicinal properties and is known to contain furanocoumarins and angelicotoxin. Angelica dahurica is also commonly known as Chinese angelica, the garden angelica, root of the Holy Ghost, and wild angelica, as well as by its Chinese name, bai zhi (白芷).

Traditional Uses

Bai Zhi has been traditionally used for respiratory conditions, skin and wound care, and pain and inflammation, among other applications.

Respiratory conditions.

  • Cold

Respiratory conditions are addressed through steam inhalation of the herb’s vapors or internal use as a warm tea. The hot infusion acts as an expectorant, helping to loosen phlegm and clear congestion. Some traditions combine it with honey for coughs.

Skin and wound care.

For skin conditions, the fresh or dried plant is applied topically as a poultice, wash, or compress. A strong decoction can be used to clean wounds and sores. The antimicrobial properties help prevent infection while promoting tissue repair.
