Botanical Overview

Elephant-Foot Yam (Amorphophallus campanulatus) is a flowering plant in the Araceae family. The traditional uses of this species reflect its genuine medicinal value, validated by generations of practical experience. The arum family (Araceae) includes herbs, climbers, and aquatics with a distinctive inflorescence consisting of a fleshy spike (spadix) surrounded by a modified leaf (spathe). Many species produce calcium oxalate crystals and acrid compounds that cause intense irritation. Despite this, several are used medicinally after proper preparation.

General Description

It is cultivated for its edible tubers in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Madagascar, New Guinea, and the Pacific islands.
