संस्कारो हि गुणान्तराधानमुच्यते।

— (Charaka Samhita, Vimanasthana 1/22)

Explanation

Samskara is the process of transformation or potentiation, where the inherent qualities (Gunas) of a substance are modified by specific processing. This can involve simple actions like heating or grinding, or complex procedures like Shodhana (purification of toxic substances) or creating fermented liquids (Asava-Arishta).

Clinical Importance

Samskara is the basis of Ayurvedic pharmaceutics (Bhaishajya Kalpana). Through specific processing, a toxic substance like Vatsanabha (Aconite) can be made into a life-saving medicine. Similarly, the properties of a simple food like rice change drastically when it is made into puffed rice (Laja), making it lighter and easier to digest.
