Explanation

The Pancha Mahabhuta theory states that all matter in the universe, including the human body, is composed of five great elements: Akasha (Ether/Space), Vayu (Air), Agni/Teja (Fire), Jala/Apas (Water), and Prithvi (Earth). The Doshas, Dhatus, and all substances are derived from unique combinations of these five elements.

Clinical Importance

This theory is the bedrock of Ayurvedic philosophy, diagnosis, and treatment. The properties (Gunas) of any food, herb, or even a disease are understood through the lens of its dominant elemental composition. Treatment involves using substances with an elemental makeup that can restore balance.
