Sanskrit Verse
नासा हि शिरसो द्वारं।
— (Sushruta Samhita, Chikitsasthana 40/21)
Explanation
Nasya is the nasal administration of medicine. The classical texts state that the nose is the gateway to the head. Therefore, medicines administered through the nasal route act directly on the brain, sinuses, and all structures of the head and neck.
Clinical Importance
Nasya is the treatment of choice for all ‘Urdhvajatrugata’ diseases (illnesses of the parts above the clavicle), including migraines, sinusitis, allergies, hair fall, and neurological and psychological disorders.
