— (Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 5)
Explanation
These are two types of oral therapies. Gandusha involves holding a larger quantity of medicated liquid (oil or decoction) in the mouth without moving it. Kavala involves holding a smaller quantity and gargling or swishing it around. These procedures are part of the daily routine (Dinacharya).
Clinical Importance
These therapies are used to strengthen the jaw and voice, improve taste perception, and treat a wide range of oral and systemic diseases, from bleeding gums and mouth ulcers to anorexia and neck stiffness. Oil pulling is a modern adaptation of this practice.
