Sanskrit Verse
देशो भूमिरातुरश्च।
— (Charaka Samhita, Vimanasthana 8/94)
Explanation
Desha refers to ‘place’ and is considered in two contexts: 1. Bhumi Desha (the geographical region, including its climate and environment) and 2. Deha Desha (the body of the patient, including the specific site of the disease). Ayurveda recognizes three main types of Bhumi Desha: Jangala (arid), Anupa (marshy), and Sadharana (moderate).
Clinical Importance
A diagnosis is incomplete without considering Desha. The prevalence of certain doshas and diseases is higher in specific geographical regions (e.g., Kapha disorders in Anupa Desha). Furthermore, treatment must be adapted to the patient’s location and environment.
