Sanskrit Definition

द्रव्यगुणकर्म (Dravya Guna Karma) — The triad forming the foundation of Ayurvedic pharmacology. Dravya (substance/drug), Guna (quality/property), and Karma (action/effect). Together, they describe what a drug substance is (dravya), what qualities it possesses (guna), and what therapeutic action it produces (karma). This systematic framework allows Ayurvedic physicians to understand, predict, and apply thousands of substances for therapeutic purposes.

“Dravyasya gunah karma cha samanyat tritayam smritam” — The three aspects of any substance — its nature (dravya), qualities (guna), and actions (karma) — are collectively remembered as its pharmacological profile.

Introduction

Ayurvedic pharmacology (Dravyaguna Vijnana) represents one of the most comprehensive and sophisticated systems of drug understanding in world medicine. While modern pharmacology relies on molecular mechanisms and receptor binding studies, Ayurveda developed a parallel system based on observable qualities and their predictable effects on the human body. This system has been validated through millennia of clinical observation and continues to provide the framework for Ayurvedic drug development and prescription.

The Dravya-Guna-Karma framework is elegant in its logic: every substance has inherent qualities (gunas) that determine its therapeutic actions (karma). By understanding the qualities of a substance, a physician can predict its effects on doshas, dhatus, srotas, and agni. This allows rational drug selection without necessarily knowing the chemical constituents — making Ayurvedic pharmacology a functionally complete system even without molecular biology.

The Ten Qualities (Dashamahaguna)

Ayurveda describes 10 fundamental pairs of opposing qualities that characterize all substances. These qualities are the language through which drug properties are communicated.

Pharmacological Principles

Anubandha (Drug-Dosha Relationship)

The fundamental principle states that drugs with qualities opposite to the disease-causing dosha will be therapeutic. This is based on the Samanya-Vishesha (similarity-dissimilarity) theory.

Sapta Dhatvagni (Seven Tissue Fires)

Drug action is mediated through seven tissue-level metabolic fires. Understanding how a drug affects each dhatvagni predicts its therapeutic and adverse effects.

Shat Srotasa (Six Channel Systems)

Drug distribution occurs through the six channel systems. Identifying which srotas a drug primarily affects determines its target therapeutic action.

  • Drug selection logic: When selecting herbs, first identify the dominant gunas (qualities) of the disease state. Then select drugs with opposing gunas.
